Job Title: Account Manager (Outside Sales) FLSA Status: Exempt

Department: Trane Supply Reports To: Trane Supply Regional Manager


This position works directly with our contractor and self-servicing owner customers to sell the complete range of products offered through the Trane Supply Channel. This lineup includes OEM parts, installation and service supplies, 1 to 25 ton equipment, rentals, and more. Success at this position requires working side-by-side with the Trane Supply Branch Managers and purchasing team, along with the equipment and rentals product managers to increase sales and customer relationships. In addition, the successful account manager will be an active and positive influence in the branch store, helping to provide ongoing mentoring and leadership to the inside personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other functions may be assigned.

    • Function as a sale representative and liaison between customers and the office
    • Develops new customer accounts by cold-calling various locations in the territory
    • Support and regularly visit customer accounts
    • Perform analysis on customer needs and uses
    • Ascertain current market opportunities
    • Increase sales to existing accounts
    • Review and provide feedback on customer support programs
    • Identify customer problems and/or needs
    • Research and provides competitor information
    • Maintains customer data files
    • Attend sales meetings
    • Regularly report sales activity, new account development, and upcoming schedule/plans
    • Notify customers of specials
    • Possesses strong knowledge of the all Trane Supply product lines, and is be able to enthusiastically demonstrate and discuss with customers
    • Provide backup support for inside sales
    • Develop multiple relationships with key players in customer operations
    • Flexibility to work overtime/weekends as required
    • Regular day travel requirements with some overnight travel


This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor s Degree preferred; Engineering or Technical Degree preferred.


  • Demonstrated competency in consultative, relationship, listening, and selling skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in business and problem solving skills (including at the consumer level)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC products and HVAC systems applications
  • Highly self-motivated, goal oriented
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Demonstrated competence in computer usage. Knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in planning, organizing, and prioritizing


Must have a valid driver s license and the means to drive to customers, store locations, and jobsites.

This position works occasionally in a typical office environment with regular visits to contractor customers and occasional visits to job sites, which includes outdoor work and work in mechanical/equipment rooms. During the job site visits, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
