Job Description – Genomic Research Scientist

Reports to: Director of Genetics and Genomics

Location: Navasota, TX

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Genomic Research Scientist within STgenetics, you will design, manage, and analyze research projects oriented toward the application of genomics and statistical tools to drive genetic improvement and value differentiation of ST genetics.

STgenetics® is the worldwide leader in Sexed Semen and Embryo production. ST is well known around the globe as one of the top sources for assistance in locating and exporting quality semen, embryos, and livestock from the United States. ST through the experience of its staff specializes in helping find quality livestock, semen, and embryos for placement domestically and internationally.

RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES

  • Statistical analyses of genomic data
  • Building tools to manage and mine large genomic databases
  • Develop new innovative research projects in the area of responsibility
  • Improve methodology for genetic evaluation
  • Remain current in area of responsibility and establishing a network of industry and academic contacts

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS

  • MSc/Ph.D. in animal breeding and/or quantitative genetics
  • Good knowledge in statistical genomics
  • Proficiency in the use of, at least, one statistical software package
  • Good scripting skills (e.g. Shell, R, Python, Perl)
  • Good understanding of the application of complex statistical models
  • Good knowledge in bioinformatic tools
  • Good understanding of utilizing genomics (e.g. SNP, CNV, Haplotypes, Sequence, etc) to make genetic improvement
  • Experience with analysis of large genomic data sets
  • Experience working in a Linux/Unix environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and reporting skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills
  • The successful candidate must be willing to relocate near ST s headquarters in Texas
