Job Description

Landscapes Management Company and Ballyhack are seeking an individual to assist in leading our team in maintaining the golf course and facility grounds in Roanoke, VA.

Job Summary

Performs a variety of assigned technical irrigation tasks and equipment operation; provides technical direction and leadership to crews assigned to specific irrigation tasks; oversees, inspects and approves work activities of assigned crews; and assists with training work crews in the performance of golf course or sports field irrigation tasks.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Completes assigned tasks such as staking and layout, HDPE pipe fusion and or PVC, controller programing, wiring and mainline and lateral line installation; assists in training employees in these tasks.
  2. Works without supervision on certain tasks; may supervise a crew of 2 – 10 employees.
  3. Verifies through inspection that assigned tasks are executed by crew according to quality standards; monitors and ensures compliance with Company and project safety requirements.
  4. Operates rubber tire mechanized equipment such as tractors, wagons, and utility vehicles.
  5. Assists in managing inventory of equipment, supplies, and materials; notifies supervisor when re-order par levels are reached.
  6. Identifies and eliminates potential waste of materials that may occur during performance of tasks.
  7. Ensures assigned equipment and tools are properly maintained by performing routine inspection and preventative maintenance.
  8. Reports potential problems with materials, equipment, employees, workmanship or safety to the foreman or Superintendent.
  9. Performs work in a safe manner and in compliance with all Company safety standards and the directions of supervisors.
  10. Demonstrates a commitment to the work and success of the project and the Company by being solution-oriented, having positive interactions with all members of the team, and meeting quality, production and safety expectations set by the supervisor or Superintendent.
  11. Performs additional assignments per supervisor s directions.

  1. Knowledge of golf course and/or sports field irrigation tasks and ability to apply principles in managing work.
  2. Knowledge of and ability to understand and apply principles of project schedule and specification requirements in managing work.
  3. Knowledge and ability to manage task assignments of an individual work crew.
  4. Ability to perform staking and layout, HDPE pipe fusion and or PVC, installation of controllers, mainline, laterals and pump station and equipment operation.
  5. Knowledge and ability to train project staff on golf course and sports field irrigation tasks, including pipe fusion and equipment operation and maintenance.
  6. Knowledge of golf course layout including typical features (e.g., bunker, tee, and fairway) or sports field components.
  7. Knowledge of golf course or sports field building materials (e.g., PVC and HDPE irrigation pipe, wire, irrigation heads, greens mix, grasses and sod, sports turf) and the ability to apply knowledge of materials to irrigation installation or maintenance tasks.
  8. Knowledge of and ability to safely and efficiently operate rubber tire mechanized equipment such as tractors, wagons, and utility vehicles.
  9. Ability to use the following equipment and tools: shovels, rakes, chop saws/saws/blades, sod cutters and soil compactors.
  10. Knowledge and understanding of basic electrical power principals such as low- and high-voltage, electric current, and volt/ampere/ohm.
  11. Must maintain a professional appearance consistent with the position.
  12. Ability to move individual tools and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  13. Ability to walk entire job site and stand or walk for long periods.
  14. Ability to understand and follow basic verbal instructions to meet quality and accuracy standards and to communicate effectively with team member and supervisors.
  15. Ability to perform tasks involving dexterous use of hands and tools and to lift, carry and operate various pieces of hand-held equipment.
  16. Ability to use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects; must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
  17. Ability and willingness to follow all Company policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook and Safety Manual.
  18. Demonstrates a sense of ownership in the work and commitment to the success of the project and the Company.
  19. Ability to work cooperatively with fellow employees and supervisors and respect the rights of others.
  20. Ability and willingness to work in outdoor elements: hot & cold temperatures, rain, mud, dust, noise, sun, thick underbrush, etc.
  21. Requires average 55-hour workweek and willingness/ability to travel; regular and timely attendance during all scheduled work days and hours is required.

Education and Experience

  1. One year experience in golf course construction or golf course maintenance with an emphasis on irrigation system installation, repair and maintenance.
  2. Experience operating rubber tire equipment such as tractors, wagons, and utility vehicles; will work in trainee capacity with trenchers/pullers and excavators.
  3. Requires certification in HDPE pipe fusion; butt-fusion, electro-fusion, and sidewall-fusion, within first six months in position.
