Job Description

This position will train at our Lake Herman Quarry location for 6 months and then the position will be located at our Todd Road facility in Santa Rosa. Candidates must be willing to travel between sites for training.


Vallejo CA (first 4 to 6 months), Santa Rosa CA

The QC Technician/Trainee will work with a trainer who will teach procedures and processes in the Quality Control Department. The majority of training will occur at the Vallejo Facility Once the trainee is certified they will be responsible for sampling, testing, and inspecting construction materials or elements in a laboratory setting, at Sonoma County and Mendocino County facilities, to ensure compliance with the supplier and/or owner specifications. Employee will perform tests to insure quality of products at the point of production and shipping. Person will visually inspect stockpiles, material sources, and truck loads at plant sites. This individual will verify test results and maintain accurate and timely records on test data, product quality, and defective materials.

The position involves, but is not limited to, the following tasks and duties:

  • Material sampling and reduction of samples
  • Preparation of materials and products for testing
  • Prepare and communicate testing and inspection results to supervisors to ensure quality control standards are satisfied and process changes can be implemented
  • Calculate adjustments needed to correct the product if necessary
  • Support production team in producing the highest quality products
  • Participate in and promote Syar s safety procedures and policies to promote a safe working environment.
  • Comply with OSHA and MSHA rules and regulations in order to perform duties in a safe manner
  • Maintenance and housekeeping of assigned areas and equipment
  • Other duties and responsibilities related to the nature of the job may be assigned on a temporary or permanent basis as needed

The hours of work for this position are usually from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some weekend and/or night work will be needed. This is an hourly, non- exempt, safety sensitive position.

Travel: Minimal; limited to local sites in Sonoma, Napa, Solano and Yolo counties


Safety Requirements:

  1. Employee is required to observe all safety standards and rules of the office and/or plant operation procedures
  2. Employee must report all injuries as soon as possible after occurrence to his/her supervisor and Risk Management
  3. Any required safety gear must be worn by all employees as necessary when visiting other facilities
  4. Must possess a current California driver s license and clean DMV (2 points or less)
  5. This position is considered a safety sensitive position and will be required to participate in the random drug/alcohol testing pool

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Basic computer skills, basic proficiency Microsoft Excel

Good oral and written communication skills

Strong mathematical skills

Analytical mindset and attention to detail is required in this position

Have the ability to communicate fluently in English

Be able to receive and understand information on the phone

High school diploma required

Adept at using various measuring and testing devices

Eventual Caltrans or AASHTO certification required once training is complete
